Convert large Shapefiles or KML files to GeoJSON and upload them as a layer.

Shapefiles larger than 5 MB must be converted to GeoJSON format before you can upload them into your Places tool.

To help you, we've found several reputable and free conversion sites. These are third-party sites, and Granicus cannot help you troubleshoot your files. Please contact your GIS or IT team if you are unsure or need help.

  1. Upload the ZIP file into the Import files box.

  2. Inspect or edit as necessary.

  3. Export as GeoJSON.

  1. Select Vector File to... and upload the Shapefile or KML.

  2. Select GeoJSON as the export format and select Convert.

  3. Download the file.

No - convert to KML first.

  1. Select Open and upload the KML file.

  2. Select Save and export as GeoJSON.

You can now upload your converted GeoJSON file into your Places tool:

  1. Select GeoJSON from the Add a map layer drop-down menu in the Add Map Layer tab of your Places tool.

  2. Name your layer and select Choose file to select and upload the GeoJSON file.

  3. Select Save layer and you will see it on the map.

  4. Select the layer again to edit the Color, Opacity, Width (in px), Properties, or Restrict Pins within Boundary.

  5. When you're finished, Save and configure any remaining tabs for your tool. You can use the eye icon to Hide your layer and the bin icon to Delete it.
